Song of Zarathustra - The Birth of Tragedy (2000) young-20

First album by this Sioux City, IA by-way-of Minneapolis spacy-ambient hardcore band.  They've reunited twice in the past year to play some most excellent shows.  Definitely worth checking out.

The Replacements - Stink (1982) TTR 8228

The Stink mini-LP begins with a taped recording of the Minneapolis Police Dept. shutting down a house party, followed by 8 brilliantly sloppy and ridiculously fast, drunken pop songs.  In my opinion, this is the closest they ever got to hardcore, even more so than Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash.

Information Society - Walking Away (1988) 7-27736

This 7" is the second single from this Minneapolis dance-pop group's self-titled album.

The Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored (1989) ORE T 31

This 12" is the third single off of the legendary debut album, and is also the opening track.  They typically opened their shows with this tune, too.  Given the song's structure - and sheer euphoric atmospherics - this makes sense.

Download also include a 33 rpm rip of the title track.

The Fall - Your Future Our Clutter (2010) DNO 264

The latest (and 28th) studio album by The Fall.  Excellent stomping, repetitive music from one of the greatest groups on the planet.

Sure, you could easily purchase the digital download or CD of this album, but you'd miss out on the two extra tracks ('986 Generator' and 'Get A Summer Song Goin' ') that are exclusive to the vinyl release.  Interestingly enough, the tracks have also been re-arranged for this version.

Primal Scream - Star (1997) CRE 263T

Blissed-out 12" from the Vanishing Point era, that features two tracks with none other than the great Augustus Pablo on melodica.  Long-time Primal Scream keyboardist Martin Duffy (ex-Felt) shows once again why he's such an asset to the group.

The photograph used for the jacket is of Bobby Hutton, Black Panther member that was shot and killed in an altercation with the Oakland Police Dept

Download also include a 33 rpm rip of the title track.

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Left Handed Dream (1982) ARE 38404

A pleasant solo Ryuichi Sakamoto outing, featuring the other 2/3 of Yellow Magic Orchestra, as well as members of M and King Crimson.  It can be a bit too proggy at times, and not surprisingly, the best moments come when the prog dinosaurs take a rest, and YMO struts their stuff.

Stand-out tracks: Kachakuchanee, The Garden Of Poppies, and Boku No Kakera.

Talk Talk - Such A Shame (1984) 12 EMI 5433

Earlier, yet already more sophisticated Talk Talk single, inspired by the excellent The Dice Man novel.

Wonderfully awful lip-synched performance (complete with choreographed vintage divers), and the official video:

The House Of Love (1988) 88561-8245-1

Fantastic psychedelic guitar pop album by The House Of Love.  This is their untitled debut album, issued on the legendary Creation label.  The only full-length album of theirs featuring the tremendous guitar-playing of Terry Bickers.  Overwrought by drugs, anxiety, and the material implications of subsequently signing to a major label for shitloads of money, Bickers left the band in style, setting some of the band's cash on fire.

'Christine' and 'Salome' are highlights for me.  Although there are occasional striking similarities between them and the Jesus & Mary Chain, this is truly stadium rock material.  The likes of U2 and Interpol wish they could touch this.

Sly & The Revolutionaries - Black Ash Dub (1980) TRLS 186

Great dub record on the Trojan label by the legendary Sly Dunbar (of Sly and Robbie production fame) with a slew of amazing guest musicians, such as Robbie Shakespeare and Ansel Collins.  What's more, the entire recording is mixed by Prince Jammy and Scientist.  Each song is an ode to a drug or drug paraphernalia.

Ride - OX4_ The Best Of Ride (2001) IGN LP14

This release compiles tracks chosen by the group themselves, spanning their first EP through their last album.  On par with My Bloody Valentine, as far as bands under the 'shoegazing' label go, yet more melodic, and dare I say, more traditional.  Their paint-stripping guitars and hurricane-force drumming will move you.  I strongly suggest their 1990-1992 output for listening.

The Fall - 77 - Early Years - 79 (1981) SFLP 6

The Fall's first compilation, which gathers several tracks from their early (obviously) singles on the Step Forward label.  Strangely enough, these tracks seem more 'musical' than the releases that followed in the early 80's that the band is often lauded for.

As Mark E. Smith foretold in the lead-off track: "We've repetition in the music/And we're never going to lose it"
